Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing a Charenton man and a Chitimacha tribal police officer.
Wilbert Thibodeaux is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of 79-year-old Eddie Lyons and Sgt. Rick Riggenbach. Thibodeaux allegedly killed Lyons in his home before setting the residence on fire. Lyons is accused of fatally shooting Riggenbach later that day.
Thibodeaux entered a plea this morning of "not guilty by reason of insanity" on two attempted first-degree murder charges and an arson charge. Thibodeaux allegedly shot two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies the same day police say he killed Riggenbach and set fire to Lyons' home.
A status conference has been scheduled for October 23. Thibodeaux will stand trial on the non-capital offenses on November 19.
