Crossing guard killed in Evangeline Parish identified

The crossing guard killed this morning in Evangeline Parish has been identified as 60-year-old Reserve Deputy John Granger of Reddell. Troopers say the crash happened on LA Highway 10 at LA Highway 376.

Troopers say at 7:30 a.m., Granger was directing traffic for Vidrine Elementary.

A 19-year-old Mamou woman was traveling north on LA 376, approaching LA 10, in a 2004 Honda passenger car. Troopers say she drove into the path of a 50-year-old Ville Platte woman's SUV, traveling west on LA 10. The front of the SUV struck the Honda's right rear door. The Honda then rotated and struck Granger. Granger was pronounced dead by the Evangeline Parish Coroner.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and sustained minor injuries. They were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Impairment is not suspected; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Troopers say Granger was wearing an orange reflective vest at the time of the crash. Granger had been a Reserve Deputy and Crossing Guard for the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office for 3 years and 8 months.

No charges have been filed, but the case is still under investigation.
