Federal housing officials have awarded $37.3 million to Louisiana public housing authorities to cover large-scale improvements to their housing assets.
Shaun Donovan, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, announced the grants Thursday. The grants are part of HUD's Capital Fund Program, which provides money annually to all public housing authorities to build, repair, renovate and/or modernize public housing. The money often is used to pay for new roofs, make energy-efficient upgrades or to replace old plumbing and electrical systems.
The Housing Authority of New Orleans will receive $15.2 million, the largest share, followed by $2 million for the Housing Authority of Monroe and $1.4 million for the Housing Authority of East Baton Rouge.
The Housing Authority of the Village of Parks received the smallest grant, $13,036.
