The Iberia Parish Council will consider next week an ordinance calling for the consolidation of the New Iberia and Iberia Parish parks and recreation departments.
The ordinance received introductory approval at last night's meeting by a 9-3 vote.
Councilman David Ditch, who proposed the ordinance, say he hopes that a merger between these two departments would be a stepping stone to a full consolidation of the New Iberia city and Iberia Parish governments.
"We have to start with this one to get the buy-in from the city," he said.
The parish council will vote on final adoption of this ordinance Wednesday at its regular council meeting. If the ordinance is approved, the New Iberia City Council and voters would have to approve the measure for it to take effect.
