Hunting could return to a big chunk of New Orleans where it has been banned since 1991.
The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission voted Tuesday to remove the restriction. The change couldn't become final until late December or early January.
A news release says the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries recommended the change for control of feral hogs and to allow youth waterfowl hunting on the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge.
The refuge has held youth hunts for two years and plans to continue. State biologist Tommy Tuma says the department secretary has had to issue an emergency order each year to allow the hunts.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sets hunting rules on the refuge. Tuma says the city would set rules outside the refuge.
