The Lafayette City-Parish Council decided in a split vote to not empanel a new commission to explore "tweaks" to the parish's home rule charter.
In a 5-4 vote, the council shot down the ordinance that would call for the creation of a charter commission to study how the current consolidated government is working in Lafayette Parish.
The ordinance would have reappointed the nine members who had previously served on the commission, which was a point of contention for Dale Brasseaux, the only member of the public to speak against the proposal.
Former charter commission member Odon Bacque and Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce Vice President Bruce Conque spoke in favor of the ordinance, along with Parish President Joey Durel, saying that the commission should have a chance to improve the way LCG works.
The vote was split largely along parish-city lines, with the four councilmen from districts outside of the city of Lafayette being joined by District 6 Councilman Andy Naquin to deny the motion.
The last charter commission proposed a disintegration of the current consolidated government in 2011, but voters did not support the proposal.
