A special day here in Acadiana, as many gathered to celebrate the Acadian culture in part thanks to the Queen of England.

It was a day to honor and remember the Acadian culture in St. Martinville.

In 2003, Queen Elizabeth II proclaimed July 28th, as the official day of remembrance of the Acadian people.

Supporters of the museum, listened to stories of their ancestors journey and
struggle to survive in a new world. "To learn that your ancestors had such strength of character, and such a strong will to live and to work hard, and to accomplish and to get educated I think that's a motivation," says Christie Maraist.

Maraist has successfully taught Acadian culture for the last 20 years, Maraist received the living legend award, signed by Governer Bobby Jindal.
"I didn't need recognition, I didn't do it for recognition and I would continue doing it with no thanks," says Maraist.

The Acadian Museum is free and open weekdays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
