THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - The Lafourche Parish Council is one step closer to setting up an election to rededicate money from parish libraries to build a new jail.
The council held a special meeting Friday to give public notice it will vote on Aug. 27 to call an election that would rededicate 1 mill of the library tax and half of the library board's general account to the jail project.
The 600-bed jail is expected to cost $20 million.
Last year, the council unanimously passed a resolution asking for the parish library system to support a rededication, noting the system has built up millions in surplus.
Parish libraries ended 2012 with a $12.7 million fund balance.
