After capturing its first district title in 16 years, Church Point hopes it can continue to add to its growing tally of milestones. JC Arceneaux has not only led the Bears to that historic title, but a few years ago, Church Point won just its second playoff game in school history. Arceneaux believes the pieces could be in place to add that next step in program building: a deep playoff run.
While Church Point only returns two starters on offense, the Bears do have the benefit of QB Jake Morvant back for another go 'round. The junior is the first incumbent quarterback at CPHS in three years and the year of experience will do wonders. Church Point will add a wrinkle to its triple-option attack. The Bears plan to use the Pistol formation to give Morvant more space to throw, hopefully creating another facet to the attack.
Defense is what Church Point hung its hat on in 2011 and this year will be no different. Imposing 300 pounder Dexter Charles is back to plug up the middle and the secondary is experienced with Chance Roy (7 INTs in 2011) and Deonta Lazare (6 INTs in 2011) leading the way.
If Church Point's offense can mature and the defense holds form, the Bears will be a contender in a rugged District 5-3A.
