HAMMOND, La. (AP) - State police are investigating a fatal hit and run crash involving a bicyclist.
The crash occurred on La Highway 1064 northeast of Hammond Sunday night and claimed the life of 53-year-old Van Johnson of Hammond.
Trooper Nick Manale says Johnson was riding his bicycle eastbound in the westbound lane of Highway 1064 when he was struck from the rear by a car driven by 19-year-old Aerell Anderson, also of Hammond.
Johnson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers found Anderson's car abandoned near the crash scene and shortly later located Anderson attempting to turn himself in at the Amite Police Department.
He was booked with negligent homicide, hit and run driving and several other traffic charges.
