Fatal Crash In Maurice Sends Woman and Police Officer to Hospital

Paul and Philomene Suire had just finished filling up on gas when they pulled out from Opta Street onto US 167.

"Initial investigation by state police indicates that a Maurice police officer was traveling north on us-167 with his lights and siren activated," Trooper Stephen Hammons said.

Maurice Officer Willis Thomas had been dispatched by the Sheriff, when soon after his car hit the driver side door of the Suire's. They had already crossed one lane of oncoming traffic, when they were hit in the second. They were both wearing seat belts. People in the area heard a sound they described as "horrendous."

"I was looking out the window when I saw the cop t-bone the customers that had actually just came to get gas," Courtney Cormier said.

Cormier works at the Econo Mart right next to where the accident occurred.

"We raced out into the street to see if we could help...but there was nothing we could do."

The 83 year-old Paul Suire, who was driving the vehicle, died on the scene. His wife, 79 year-old Philomene, was transported to a hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

Officer Thomas was not wearing a seat belt and went to the hospital with minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation by State Police.
