Deputies in Lafayette are investigating the theft of a political sign, caught on tape. A homeowner, who doesn't want to be identified, says a surveillance camera outside her Lafayette home captured a thief in action.
"I don't think it was a joke it was my personal property. Even though it didn't have any real value, it was just the point that they come onto my property in the middle of the night and stole something that didn't belong to them," said the Lafayette Homeowner.
In the video shown, you can see the driver slow down and a female passenger jump out to grab the Mitt Romney sign before speeding off.
The homeowner didn't notice her sign was missing until a day later but she was very angry since her sign was the only sign taking in the neighborhood. Although a petty theft, deputies say those responsible could face probation and up to a year in prison, as well as a fine.
'"Any time something of value is taken from someone else with the intent to deprive the owner of that merchandise its considered a theft under Louisiana Law," said Kip Judice Lafayette Sheriff Office.
The resident says she is glad she can actually see somebody intentionally stealing the sign and the wind didn't blow it away.
"Maybe I wasn't the only house someone stole a sign from. Someone else may have been able to get the license plate number so that this person can be caught," said the Lafayette Homeowner.
Deputies say something like this can be a joke but when you start taking property or vandalizing something that isn't yours, you certainly cross that line and you're in a criminal issue.
