New Iberia's sister city in Spain, Alhaurin de la Torre, announced the opening of Avenida de Nueva Iberia in honor of New Iberia. This modified road is in the western area of this Spanish city and was completed at a cost of €300,000 (approximately $392,000 US).
The opening ceremony was conducted by Mayor Joaquín Villanova and the City Council and was attended by many residents of the area who had petitioned for the improvements. The redesign is intended to improve traffic flow, facilitate pedestrian traffic and beautify the area. The project included the construction of new sidewalks, landscaping, new pedestrian bridges over two streams as well as a gazebo and a roundabout.
The roundabout is decorated with a sculpture by Alhaurin de la Torre artist, Sandra Martínez Céspedes. It is composed of two circles of multi-colored tiles representing the old world of Spain and the new world of New Iberia.
New Iberia hosted a delegation from Malaga in April of 2009 and the twinning pact was completed in Spain when Mayor Curry and several local residents attended a formal ceremony there in April of 2011.
