Following an informal assessment of sugarcane damage from Hurricane Isaac, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., says the damage is extensive in localized areas.
"While there is sugarcane that will bounce back and thrive, some of the cane planted prior to Isaac's landfall that I surveyed yesterday was significantly damaged," said Commissioner Strain. "Sugarcane is a $1.1 billion industry for the state of Louisiana. The damage from this storm could impact productivity depending on the weather for the rest of the harvest season. Growers should document their losses for use in the event assistance is granted."
Some of the recently planted and now damaged cane will have to be replanted. Documentation should include photos. Do not destroy any damaged crops until they have been inspected by an insurance adjuster and an agent from the Farm Service Agency (FSA).
On Thursday, Commissioner Strain and staff evaluated sugarcane fields in St. James, St. John and Lafourche parishes.
