Tangipahoa Parish voters will decide Oct. 19 whether to approve half-cent sales taxes to greatly renovate and enlarge the parish jail so that it could house up to 856 prisoners.
The parish council voted 9-1 Monday to move forward with the proposed tax election.
Only Councilman Nicky Muscarello said he would not support the measure.
Director of Parish Finances Jeff McKneely said the half-cent sales tax would raise about $7 million a year if it's approved. That money would be used to expand and substantially improve the jail in Amite.
