A Sagging Pants Ordinance May Soon Be Adopted in Acadia Parish

A sagging pants ordinance is on the agenda at tonight's Acadia Parish Police Jury meeting.

The ordinance would make it unlawful "for any person in a public place or in view of the public" to wear pants, shorts, or skirts that expose their undergarments.

The ordinance is modeled after a similar ordinance enacted in Vermilion Parish earlier this year. The jury committee already gave preliminary approval to the law. At tonights meeting, the jury will vote to have a public hearing. Once a public hearing is held, the jury will make a final vote on whether the law will go into effect or not.

"It's not respecting the people and it's a lot of elderly people that's complained, in the cities they have a law to protect them but in the rural areas they don't and I've got some calls that they want to try to pass it parish wide," said A.J. Credeur Acadia Parish Police Juror.

The jury will also decide what fine and/or jail sentence will be attached to the law.
The meeting starts at 6:30p.m.
