New Information on the New Iberia Evacuation. Deputies say around 5:20 am, a representative with Union Pacific Rail Road advised that a railroad car was possibly leaking chemicals at West Washington and Highway 3212 in New Iberia. The Iberia Parish Fire District arrived on scene along with the Iberia Parish Sheriffs Office HAZ-MAT Unit and located the specific container that was leaking. It was determined to be chlorine gas. Several homes in the immediate area were evacuated. Olin Chemical Response Team was contacted by Union Pacific Rail Road and was able to stop the leak. The container was pressure tested and the rail cars were able to resume travel.
