Lafayette school board to consider charter schools, cell phone policy

The Lafayette Parish School Board will consider changes to its student cell phone policy and discuss charter schools during its regular school board meeting on Wednesday.

The board will consider approving charter school applications from Charter Schools USA and the National Heritage Foundation. They would build physical school facilities in Lafayette Parish with their own funds, if their applications are approved.

The proposed cell phone policy would align with the board's new discipline plan, if approved. Cell phones are prohibited at all schools.

All cell phones visible or audible during the school day would be confiscated for five days under the new policy. The second offense would result in confiscation for the remainder of the school year.

That's tougher than the current policy in which students' phones are confiscated for five days on the first offense; 30 days on the second offense; and the remainder of the school year for the third offense.
