Fire district work pays off for Chackbay

CHACKBAY, La. (AP) - Chackbay homeowners won't see their property insurance costs increase since the community's Volunteer Fire Department has made improvements.

The Courier reports an assessment performed in May by the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana would have raised the volunteer department's rating from a 5 to a 6 if specific changes were not made in six months.

Executive Director Bob Moorman says the group assesses each fire department in Louisiana every five years on firefighting ability, 911 communications and the community's water supply on a scale of one to 10, with 1 being the best.

Moorman says homeowners would have seen a 2-3 percent increase in their insurance costs if the rating had risen by one point.
