LA Swift bus service shuts down Wednesday

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The last trips are here for the LA Swift commuter bus service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

The service is shutting down Wednesday evening.

It's unclear whether the closure will be temporary or permanent.

Federal money for the service, which started in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, is shrinking, leaving a $750,000 funding gap.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration decided against spending state money to fill the shortfall, saying the transit system was intended to be temporary for storm victims.

But local officials said people have come to rely on the service to travel to their jobs. They are searching for ways to keep the commuter bus running, but their first proposal included financing ideas that weren't allowed under federal transit funding guidelines.

LA Swift had more than 12,000 riders monthly.
