WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (AP) - The discovery of a plague-infected squirrel has prompted the closure of three campgrounds in Southern California's Angeles National Forest.
The Los Angeles Daily News reports Broken Blade, Twisted Arrow and Pima Loops of the Table Mountain campgrounds were closed Wednesday. The camps are near Wrightwood and about 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
A ground squirrel trapped there on July 16 tested positive this week for bubonic plague. The disease is spread through flea bites and can be fatal if untreated.
The campgrounds will be closed for at least seven days as officials find squirrel burrows and dust them to control fleas.
