THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - According a testimony, a Lafourche Parish jail inmate accused of setting a fire in his cell in March that led to a full evacuation of the jail was trying to get access to drugs and cigarettes.
The Courier reports state Judge Jerome J. Barbera III found probable cause Thursday to bind 21-year-old Skylleur Hayes, of Thibodaux, over for trial on an aggravated arson charge.
According to court testimony given by sheriff's Detective Jeff Chamberlain, Hayes used a light socket, metal and toilet paper to set a blanket on fire in a cell block housing 26 inmates so prisoners would be evacuated to another section where marijuana and cigarettes were hidden.
The contraband was never found.
