ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Two inmates have pleaded guilty to assaulting another inmate at the federal prison in central Louisiana.
U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley says 48-year-old Ernest Prado and 33-year-old Gumaro Lopez, both inmates at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, entered pleas Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Dee E. Drell.
Finley, in a news release Thursday, said the defendants face up to 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release for assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to evidence presented at the plea hearing, Prado and Lopez assaulted a man using "homemade" ice pick type weapons. Finley says when the corrections officers approached to intervene in the assault, the men threw the picks to the ground. The injured inmate sustained about 15 puncture wounds.
Sentencing is set for Oct. 28.
