Bond reduced for man accused of raping and exposing child to AIDS

Bond has been reduced for a Lafayette man accused of raping a five-year-old child and exposing him to AIDS. A 15th Judicial District judge reduced 29-year-old Conwell Cormier's bond from $1 million to $500,000. "I thought the million dollar bond was somewhat excessive," Cormier's attorney Royale Colbert said. Colbert asked for the reduction because Cormier has no criminal history.

The Lafayette City Marshal's Office arrested Cormier in April after investigating Cormier's alleged sexual assault against the child in December in the 200 block of Beau Basin Rd.

Although bond has been reduced, chances are slim Cormier's family will have more than $60,000 to bond him out of jail. "I don't think the family is going to put that kind of money together," Colbert said. If Cormier were to bond out, he would have to live with his mother and would have a 7 p.m. curfew, GPS monitoring and no contact with minors. "I compliment the judge and I compliment the DA," Colbert said.

Cormier's trial is scheduled for Dec. 3.
