MONROE, La. (AP) - Monroe City Council chairman Joe "Jay" Marx says he will not seek re-election.
The News-Star reports Marx announced his plans in a statement released Monday.
Marx says he felt it was time "to let someone else offer their talents to this important leadership role." He said he plans to pursue other community projects and endeavors.
Marx, who became chairman two years ago, has served as councilman for District 1 since he was elected in 2004.
Mayor Jamie Mayo described Marx as a "tremendous leader" for both District 1 and the entire city and he will be missed.
An election to fill the seat will be held Nov. 6.
